What You Can Expect

We are using FOAM dodgeballs! The dodgeball has a SOFT coating and SOFT inner foam to reduce the chance of injury. You'll play a minimum of 4 games a night and gym-style pickup games after league games end.

Additional Info

You can have up to 12 on your team. 6 play on the court at a time (max 5 men).

Each Night you will have 4 10-minute games. At the conclusion of "season games" each week we will play pickup games where we mix teams up and all play different styles of dodgeball together.

This is a Bar Champs League: At the end of the night, make your way down to our sponsor bar, The Dark Horse Tavern! (5-minute drive). There is where we play our bar games, hang out with league members and have some drinks.

Scoring: You play as many games as possible within the 10-minute match. The team scores points based on the number of people that are left on your team when the game ends. For example, if my team won with 3 people in game one, lost with 2 people left in game 2, and won game 3 with 1 person left my team would have won the match 4-2.

Join our Facebook Group "Dodgeball on Long Island' to find teammates, get info about tournaments and share their favorite Dodgeball memes. Free agents and small groups can expect to receive their team assignments one week prior to the start of the league.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nope! Most of our leagues and tournaments allow you to join as a free agent or with one or with a group of friends (while being kept together), in fact, most first time players join this way. When you register we'll ask a few simple questions and we'll do our best to fill out your roster with players like you. That said, the free agent pool for some leagues, like cornhole are limited so your best bet is to join with a friend and form a complete team.

Generally, registration covers the cost of equipment, facility use, umpires/refs and a team shirt. You'll also be given access to the various social events we host and sponsor throughout the year.

Rules

Players

  • Teams consist of 6 players per game.
  • Legal Line-Up: There must be at least 1 girl on the court at all times 5M/1F. If a team cannot produce a legal line-up that team will be allowed to play short-handed but cannot replace a player of one gender with a player of another.
  • During the regular season, subs are allowed in the case that players can not play. For subs during the postseason contact the league director before the night of playoffs.
  • On a catch, the players come back in from the order in which they were out with the subs from the team being the first players in while following gender rules.

Match-

  • All Teams will arrive at the same time and play 4 10-minute games each night
  • We will be rotating matchups each week so make sure you check your schedule weekly
  • Each game will be played with a 10-minute timer. You will be able to fit as many matches as possible within the 10 minutes for each opponent.
  • In the event of any 1 v 1 situation where nobody is throwing the ball, we will go to a no-blocking rule that is at the discretion of the referee.

Rush

  • Each game will start with players behind the backline
  • When the referee starts the clock the team may only go for the balls on their right side of the court.
  • The balls have to be cleared back to the white line before throwing the ball on opening rush. After clearing the white line once players may then go up to the centerline to throw the ball.

Outs

  • I. A player will be deemed out when:
  • They are hit with a live ball. (Clothing is considered part of the body.) or
  • They are struck by a ball that bounces off of a teammate or a ball a teammate possesses or
  • They throw a ball and it is caught before it hits the floor, the wall or the ceiling or
  • They step or fall outside of the boundaries including, Sidelines, backlines, and the centerline(must have the full foot over to be called out) or
  • They drop the ball they are possessing when trying to block a ball thrown at them(see blocking).

Blocking

  • Players can defend themselves from a ball by blocking it with another ball. No part of the thrown ball can hit any part of the player’s body, it must only hit the ball. Also the player must remain in control of the blocking ball. A player that drops the ball as a result of being hit, will be deemed out.

Burden and Stalling

  • Stalling is when a team/player is deliberately trying to delay the game.
  • Each court will have a deemed "burden ball" which will be a ball of a specific color. If both sides have 3 balls the team with the burden ball will have to throw first
  • Teams will have 10 seconds to clear burden(majority of balls on their side) once all balls are on the court and the referee signals burden count
  • If a referee rules a team/player is stalling, a ten-second countdown will begin. By the end of this countdown, the team that holds the advantage must throw enough dodgeballs to give ‘advantage’ to the opposing team.
  • If by the end of the ten-second countdown, a team/player failed to follow these rules, all balls will go to the other team.
  • In any 1 on 1 situation, longer than 60 seconds there will be a no-blocking rule to ensure there is no stalling out the clock.

Boundaries

  • The dimensions of the court will be the size of the volleyball court.
  • Players must remain in the dimensions of the court as best as possible.
  • Players that have been knocked out or teams that are not playing are expected to retrieve balls. It will be strongly encouraged for active players to stay in the boundaries at all times.
  • Players in bounds may retrieve a ball out of bounds by exiting through the backline with a hand in the air. However, if they catch the ball behind the backline the catch will not count and will play on
  • Players who are out of bounds retrieving a ball and still get hit are still out
  • When returning back in from a catch players are eligible to get hit once they step into play.
  • A player has to make first contact within the boundaries when catching a ball(momentum catch rules) and land in bounds. If the catch is made while falling out of bounds the catch will count and they will still be in the game.

PLAYER CONDUCT

  • Have fun, play fair.
  • Respect the integrity and judgment of the referees
  • Be responsible for your actions and be honest
  • If rules are not followed, Cards can be given out verbally.
  • During a match: If a player receives two (2) yellow cards or (1) red card, that player will be ejected from the game currently going on; plus the following game.
  • Players can receive cards at the discretion of the league director for arguments with the referee, cheating/not taking their outs, disrupting play of the game, other unsportsmanlike conduct
